Connect with local settlement agencies

Settlement agencies are in place to help new residents settle into their community and should be your first point of contact. They offer a wide range of support services including community orientation, pre-employment support, language programs, citizenship classes, workshops, conversation groups, and access to free-of-charge printing and photocopying for post-arrival paperwork. The Saint John Newcomers Centre has a useful First Things First Checklist that we encourage you to review. Settlement agencies you may want to visit include the Saint John Newcomers Centre, YMCA Newcomer Connections, and PRUDE Inc.

Become familiar with your surroundings

In your first few days, you should locate the nearest grocery store, hospital or clinic, bank, your place of employment or education, community library, and the closest public transportation stop. These are the places you will need to visit on a regular basis. Community maps are available online for the City of Saint John, Uptown Saint John Area, and the larger Saint John Region. There are several phone numbers to keep on hand as you make yourself at home, including 911 for emergency services, 811 for medical questions, and 211 for other support.

Get a copy of the New Resident Guide

The New Resident Guide contains everything you need to know about starting your life in Saint John. The information contained on this website is the same information in the New Resident Guide. The guide, however, is a booklet that you are able to carry with you as you explore your community. From housing, transportation, language services, education, and employment, this guide will help you navigate the settlement process. Paper copies of the New Resident Guide are available for pick-up at several locations throughout the Saint John Region, including the Saint John Newcomers Centre, YMCA Newcomer Connections, Saint John Welcome Centres, City of Saint John and PRUDE Inc.

Convert your money to Canadian currency

In order to make purchases in Canada, you will need to have Canadian currency. So find the nearest bank to exchange your money. Once you are settled, you should also open a bank account, which requires two pieces of photo identification and a home address. You can choose from several local banks to open your first account, and they will walk you through the process. Learn more

Decide on reliable transportation

When it comes to moving around your community, there are many options to choose from. One of the most affordable and simple options is the public transportation system, which operates buses. The Saint John Region is also serviced by a number of taxi companies. Taxis use a metered payment system, and you can confirm the price of your trip in advance. In order to drive a personal car, you must have a valid driver’s license. Learn more
