Healthcare

In Canada, every province and territory offers their own health care insurance plan called Medicare. With Medicare, all Canadian residents have reasonable access to medically-necessary hospital and physician services without paying out-of-pocket.

Dental care, eye care, chiropractic care, and massage are not covered by Medicare. These services must be paid for by the patient or by a personal health care insurance provider.

Your Medicare card

In New Brunswick, all members of a family must have their own Medicare card. You may apply for this in-person at Service New Brunswick or online. While you wait for your Medicare card, you may pay for medical services directly or choose to purchase personal health insurance.

Drugs and medicine

Prescription drug costs are not covered by Medicare, so patients have to pay out of pocket unless they have private health insurance. There are many pharmacies in the Saint John Region that sell medicine and fill doctors’ prescriptions.
