In Canada, it is very common for families to have a pet. The most popular pets are dogs and cats. Keep in mind that pets require time and attention and come with a cost, such as food and vet bills. If you own your own house, you can keep a pet with few restrictions. Owning a Dog
Dogs are one of the most popular pets. People often think of their dog as a part of the family, and enjoy taking their dog with them on outings. But there are rules, by-laws, and restrictions that you must be aware of. For example, dog owners are required to carry doggy bags and pick up after their pet. It is regarded as rude to not pick up after your pet, especially when it is on someone else's lawn or garden.
Many pubs and shops are dog-friendly, and allow you to take your dog inside or keep it on the patio with you. Unless you are in a designated off-leash area, your dog must remain on a leash at all times. This by-law is enforced by fines, and offences are recorded. Every dog must be licensed. The dog licenses must be renewed annually. Cats do not require licenses. To obtain a license, contact your veterinarian.
Off-leash Parks
Dog owners are reminded to respect the rules of the parks by keeping their dogs leashed unless they are within the designated off-leash area. All owners must pick up after their dogs, and properly dispose of their refuse. For your convenience, City dog parks offer dog bag dispensers and garbage cans and pole baskets. If a person has been bitten by a dog, or if there’s an altercation with dog owners, contact the police in your community.
