Accessing Medical Care

In New Brunswick there are three main ways that residents can get medical care: their family doctor, a walk-in clinic, or a hospital.

Family doctor

For most Canadians, a family physician is their primary care provider when it comes to everyday health care. To help New Brunswickers find a family doctor in their area, the province created the Patient Connect NB program. To find a doctor near you, search gnb.ca for “Patient Connect”.

Walk-in clinics and after-hours clinics

Walk-in and after-hours clinics provide care for patients with non-urgent medical problems who don’t have a family doctor or who can’t get an appointment with their doctor quickly enough. After-hours clinics provide non-urgent medical care outside regular office hours and generally require patients to make appointments. Walk-in clinics often serve patients on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Hospitals

You may need to visit a hospital if you require emergency medical attention, or if your family doctor refers you to a hospital for treatment. The Saint John Region has two hospitals providing emergency medical services and specialized treatments.

Online Healthcare

eVisit

For patients currently without a primary health care provider, eVisit can help with your medical concerns and any routine investigations or referrals to specialists, including prescription refills. With eVisit, you can speak with a Nurse Practitioner online from the comfort of your home. eVisitNB Virtual Care is covered with a valid Medicare Card issued by the Government of New Brunswick.

NB Health Link

NB Health Link (https://nbhealthlink.ca/) provides its registered patients with access to a network of family doctors and nurse practitioners throughout the province. Medical appointments are available in-person, by telephone or online, depending on your symptoms and needs. Only patients on the Patient Connect NB list will be called to join NB Health Link. If you are not yet on the Patient Connect NB list please click here or call 811.

Phone numbers to know

Telecare 811

Dial 811 if you have a non-emergency medical or health question. An experienced nurse will offer advice on medical treatments 24 hours a day. Telecare is a free-of-charge, confidential service that does not require a Medicare number.

Emergency 911

Call 911 if you are experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening emergency such as a medical issue, fire, or crime. The operator will dispatch a fire truck, police, or ambulance. There is no fee for police or fire emergencies. In the case of medical emergencies, an ambulance will be dispatched with two paramedics. Note that ambulance calls will result in a bill for $130.60, so only call an ambulance if it is an emergency. Otherwise, call Telecare 811, or visit the hospital on your own.

Community Programs and Services 211

Call 211 to get information on a wide range of community programs and referral to community, social, health, and government services. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Calls are always answered by a person, and multilingual service is available.
